급성 뇌경색은 뇌에 영양을 공급하는 혈관이 갑자기 막혀서 장애가 발생하는 것입니다. 혈관이 막히는 이유는 혈전 때문인 경우가 대부분입니다. 혈전이 뇌로 흘러가다가 중간에 걸리면 혈액공급이 완전히 차단됩니다. 뇌세포는 몇분이 지나지 않아 죽게 되고, 막혔던 혈관을 뚫어 혈액 공급이 재개되더라도 다시 살아나지 않습니다.
